Rosebell Owiti aka Bella is a passionate creative entrepreneur, photographer, and multidisciplinary visual artist. She is the founder of Studio BelaBela, a vibrant creative hub in Mombasa that provides a space for artists to create, network, showcase, and sell their work. With a background in visual arts [painting, drawing, mosaic] her work spans in photography, videography, sculpting, and art and photography education.
We caught up with her for an interview. Here is how it went.
What motivated you to start Studio BelaBela?
I started Studio BelaBela out of a deep desire to create a safe and nurturing environment for artists in Mombasa. I saw a gap in the availability of creative spaces when I moved to Mombasa 12yrs ago. Being an artist myself, I needed a space where artists could freely express themselves, collaborate, and gain exposure. There was none at the time and so when I got the opportunity, I created a space that I could work as an artist. It organically grew into a creative space. I understand the needs of artists very well and so I have over the years moulded the space into one that offers a platform that supports emerging and established artists by providing resources, training, and opportunities to showcase their work and grow their talent.
Which services does Studio BelaBela offer? And what makes it unique from other studios?
Studio BelaBela offers a range of services, including:
- A well-equipped photography and videography studio available for rental to other creatives.
- Personal and commercial photography services.
- Art and photography training programs for children and youth.
- Art experiences and events under our product, Sanaa Kivulini, which includes painting, pottery, acoustic performances, poetry events and art training.
- Art and Photography Training through MAPTI, our newly founded Art School
What sets Studio BelaBela apart is our holistic approach—we are not just a studio but a community-driven space that encourages entrepreneurship for artists.
The art industry in Mombasa is not as developed as in Nairobi; what can this be attributed to?
Several factors contribute to this disparity but the major challenge is the limited number of galleries, creative spaces, and funding opportunities for artists in Mombasa compared to Nairobi. There is also less exposure and structured platforms that nurture artistic talent. This has led many artists to relocate to Nairobi for better opportunities yet Mombasa has so much talent.
What can be done to improve the visibility of the art industry in Mombasa?
- Establish more creative hubs and galleries to provide artists with exhibition spaces.
- Strengthen collaborations between artists, corporate entities, and tourism stakeholders to promote local art.
- Increase public art installations and cultural events to engage the wider community.
- Provide more funding and mentorship programs to support emerging artists.
- Utilize digital platforms and social media to market Mombasa’s art scene beyond the local community.
These are just a few suggestions but more can be done.

What milestones have you achieved so far with regards to Studio BelaBela?
Some key milestones include:
- Successfully launching and growing Sanaa Kivulini as a recognized art experience brand. Sanaa Kivulini is a product of Studio BelaBela
- Establishing a fully functional photography and videography studio catering to numerous clients.
- Training and mentoring young creatives through structured art and photography programs through The Mombasa Art and Photography Training Institute {MAPTI]
- Co-founding Serenade Sessions, a music talent platform that has helped young music artists gain visibility.
- Hosting various successful art and networking events, strengthening the creative community in Mombasa.
What do you envision for The Studio in the coming years?
I envision Studio BelaBela becoming a leading creative hub in East Africa, offering more advanced training programs, expanding our studio facilities, and hosting larger-scale art events. I also see us collaborating with international artists and institutions to provide global opportunities for local talent.

If young creatives in Mombasa would like to use the space, what is the procedure?
Young creatives can reach out to us via our social media platforms, website, or visit the studio to discuss their needs. We offer flexible studio rental options, mentorship opportunities, and participation in our various programs. Depending on the nature of the project, we tailor our services to support them in their creative journey.
As a woman entrepreneur, what is your advice to other women who seek to start their own businesses?
Believe in your vision and stay committed to your goals. Challenges will always arise, but persistence, resilience, and continuous learning are key. Surround yourself with a strong support system, seek mentorship, and don’t be afraid to take risks. Most importantly, build a brand that aligns with your passion and values. You can do anything if you believe in yourself.
What is your parting shot?
The creative industry has immense potential to transform lives and communities. I encourage artists and creatives to embrace their craft, collaborate, and push boundaries. With the right support and determination, Mombasa’s art scene can thrive and gain the recognition it deserves. Let’s keep creating and telling our stories through art!
