Kevin is a film-maker and content creator based in Mombasa, Kenya. He is the CEO of KingKidd Productions, a dynamic video production company.
We caught up with him for an interview. Here is how it went.
What motivated you to start KingKidd Productions?
I have always had a passion for art ever since I was in primary school, since I was doing photography for most of our school trips. Having struggled with dyslexia, especially in my primary school life, art was a place I could run to: to express myself & my creativity. My main motivation in starting a video production company was to help businesses grow visually and to create employment for the youth in my community.
What are some of the milestones you have achieved so far?
My main milestone has been growing the company from scratch to what it is today and being able to create employment opportunities for young people. I have also built partnerships with international companies and received nominations for various awards.
In your opinion, what makes a good photograph?
A good photograph to me is one that passes a message and evokes the emotions of the viewer.

Mombasa is well known for its tourist attractions. However, the potential of the Mombasa people is not well documented. Why do you think this is?
This is due to various factors including a limited access to advanced equipment which has affected the means for creatives to tell Mombasa’s story more effectively as well as a lack of support for creatives from local policy makers.
What can be done to better tell the story of Mombasa?
Fostering collaborations among creatives and youth in the industry and support from the government regarding laws that help the creative industry, is a great way to start.
What challenges do you face in your business?
My challenges include;
- High costs of equipment and production software.
- Limited access to financing
- Unpredictable market trends
Where do you see your business in future?
I see my business as an established professional video studio that will help businesses and creatives grow, collaborate with one another and easily access high quality equipment.
What is your parting shot?
If you want to go fast, go alone but if you want to go far, go together. Collaboration is the key to a successful future for us all.
