HOW TO BUILD A SUCCESSFUL CAREER PATH

By Steve Caloo

No matter what career path you choose to pursue, one of your desires will be to be successful as a proffessional in your line of duty. A successful career guarantees financial freedom, more employment opportunities and a vast network.

However, success in a career, just like any other venture, does not happen over-night. It takes hardwork, patience and consistency to be a recognised proffessional in the career path that you take. So how do you build success in your career? Let’s dive in.

1. Set your objectives right.
Before you set out in your career, you need to outline your objectives right from the onset. Whether it is to be the go-to person in your line of work or to be the CEO of an organisation, you need to have it down on paper.

Setting objectives enables you to measure your goals over a specified timeline to ascertain whether you are progressing in your career or not. Think of it like setting your destination before you even begin your journey.

2. Build your resume.
Your resume is your way of saying `I can do this, and that in this and that way.’ Opportunities arise everywhere and it is crucial to have a resume that speaks by itself for you.

A good way to build your resume is through volunteering for charitable organisations which offer valuable on-the-job experience. Updating your educational qualifications through online courses is also very important.

Importantly, having your resume written in a proffessional way is crucial. It is of no use walking into an interview room with your resume written like a composition.

3. Know your strengths and weaknesses.
Awareness is key to your personal growth and development. Are you patient enough to sit in an office from 8am-5pm? Or would you rather run to the field and coach the rugby team?

Knowing your strengths and weakness helps you choose a career path that you are passionate about. It also enables you to focus your energy in improving your weak points. At the end of the day, you should always choose a career path that complements your strengths as a person.

4. Be responsible in your life.
What is your definition of responsibility? Can you be trusted with a position of authority?

You need to be responsible enough to make your own decisions in life and accept all situations that arise from the mistakes you make. Quit blaming others for mistakes you make.

5. Seek to constantly improve.
Your standard reflects the way you believe, behave, think and act. Therefore, it is important that you set high and attainable standards and constantly evaluate yourself so that you are always on your toes. People who set high standards do not accept anything less.

If possible, seek educational opportunities through trainings and seminars and courses that will expand your knowledge in your career.

6. Network
Networking is all about creating the long-lasting relationships that are beneficial to your growth as a career person. Thus, attend seminars and workshops and meet new faces.

These networks that you create in your journey can be useful in creating new opportunities for career growth.

Conclusion
Being successful in your career takes time and effort. However, it is quite rewarding to someone seeking to pursue any career.
